Dear incoming students,

Below, you will find practical information for ATHENS session to be held in November 11-18,2017 including; general information about ITU and Istanbul, Accommodation, European Dimension Activities and Courses.


The history of Istanbul Technical University dates back to the Ottoman Empire when it was founded in 1773 as a Royal School of Naval Architecture. Ever since its founding ITU strives to continue to expand its development as a dynamic world university with a mission to provide education, conduct research, and initiate technological developments as a university competing in a rapidly globalizing world. 

ITU is located in Istanbul, once known as the capital of capital cities and has many unique features. It is the only city in the world to straddle two continents, and the only one to have been a capital during two consecutive empires – Byzantium and Ottoman. ITU has continued to develop in parallel with the city. Today, ITU provides education for approximately30,000 students at campuses Taşkışla, Gümüşsuyu, Maçka, Tuzla and Ayazağa located throughout Istanbul. All campuses are connected to each other by metro (M2). The main campus is located within an area of 256 hectares in the business area of the city. 

ITU is known for educating highly skilled Engineers in a contemporary fashion. Delivering undergraduate engineering degree at the end of 4 years, ITU provides the master degree in two year programmes and doctoral degrees at the end of at least 3 years. 23 Engineering programs have been accredited by ABET. ITU is a bilingual university. Courses are offered both in Turkish and English. 

ITU actively upholds a strong commitment to expand relationships with select institutions abroad and promotes the international Exchange of students and scholars. With more than 130 international partnership agreements, the highest number of outgoing Erasmus Exchange students, ITU also considers itself an international university which is a member of EAIE, BSUN, CESAER, OECD, EUA, IAU, CMU, TIME, IAMU, ATHENS and ITU also conducts International Dual Degree Programs with some state universities in the USA and is the first Turkish university to introduce the ECTS (European Credit Transfer System). IAESTE center of Turkey is located at ITU main campus and the ERASMUS office and student club works very actively.

With its 9500 PhD and Masters Students and more than 360 labs, ITU considers itself a research focused university. With two former Presidents of The Republic and many ministers as graduates, ITU holds a strong and active bond with its alumni.

You can either take a taxi (costs approximately 55,00 TL/ around 13-15 Euros) from Istanbul Atatürk Airport to TaksiM. However, we advise you to take the HAVATAŞ shuttle.

From Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen Airport – Taksim HAVATAŞ shuttle costs 

You can either take a taxi (costs approximately 90,00 TL/ around 20-30 Euros) from Sabiha Gökçen Airport to Taksim. However, we advise you to take HAVATAŞ shuttle.

You can reach Taksim, the city center via ITU Ayazağa Campus metro line (M2 line). The most up to date Metro timetable can be reached from here. The M2 line is a direct line between Taksim and ITU.

ACCOMMODATION: Rooms are booked for all students from Saturday 11th - Sunday 19th morning (8 nights) at Neverland Hostel in Beyoğlu, Taksim. This hostel is on İstiklal Street which is a popular part of town for International students.

Please send individual e-mails to the Neverland Hostel to confirm your reservation. The rate per night will be 8,00  Euros for each guest in a quad room including breakfast. If you prefer a different duration of stay you have to make individual arrangements with the hostel. Please state that you are an ATHENS Student.

STARTING DATE AND TIME: ITU welcome session starts on November 11, Saturday at 17:00.

You will be picked up from the Neverland Hostel at 17:00 o’clock by the Exchange Student Club (Exchange Club representative's contact details will be announced here.) 
They will spend the first night with you to orient you to the surrounding area (İstiklal Street).The European Dimension starts on November 12, Sunday. You will be picked up from the hostel in the morning at 09:00 o’clock.

EUROPEAN DIMENSION ACTIVITIES: European Dimension activities aims at introducing you to Istanbul.

Plan: The guided tour with bus starts at 10.00 am. You will have a boat tour at 10.30 on the Bosphorus.  Afterwards, Following a lunch at Ortaköy, you will visit Covered Bazaar and Spice Bazaar. You will have free time at the Sultanahmet. The tour ends with dinner.
Date: European Dimension activies will be held on November 12, 2017
55 Euros. Students are expected to pay cash only.

TERMINATION DATE: November 18, Saturday. 
This is your free day. Enjoy it as much as you can!

ITU Istanbul Technical University:

As the local Coordinator and director of ATHENS, I would like to extend a warm welcome to all of you.

Arrival: We expect you on Saturday, November 11th  any time after 10:00 o’clock.  When you arrive to the airport you may share a cab that will cost about 20 Euros to go to the Neverland Hostel. If you are travelling alone, it would be best to take the airport shuttle called HAVATAŞ right in front of the airport exit gate. This bus would cost 5 Euro and will take you to Taksim Square. If your luggage is not very heavy you may walk to the Neverland Hostel. 

The Welcome-Session: ITU welcome session starts on: Saturday, November 11th at 17:00.

You will be picked up from the Neverland Hostel at 17:00 o’clock in the afternoon by the Exchange Student Club (Exchange Club representative can be reached from:

They will spend the first night with you to orient you to the surrounding area (İstiklal Street).The European Dimension starts on Sunday. You will be picked up from the hostel in the morning at 09:00 o’clock. Boat trip and city tours are being organized for all day on the 12
th of November.

Classes start on the 13th of November. 2017 Monday at 08:30. ITU students will accompany you during the week to show transportation and pick you up at 08:00 in the morning from the Hostel. They also create special events all throughout the week to show you Turkish Hospitality.

 European Dimension:

There are a total of 20 students coming for the November 2017 session. 20 are enrolled at the ITU ARCH19. The European Dimension activities will last for one full day and you will be toured by a bus and a friendly tour guide. The cost will be 55 Euros for one day including some meals. The programme will be on November 12, 2017 Sunday.
